Welcome

Thanks for visiting this website dedicated to disseminating safe and efficient functional assessment procedures that inform highly effective and humane treatments for problem behavior of persons with autism or intellectual disabilities (ID).  wordle 4

Functional assessments of severe behavior problems of persons with autism or ID have been described in the research literature since the 1960s. Functional assessments essentially ask why problem behaviors such as self-injury and aggression are occurring so that treatment can be personalized.

Several reviews of intervention research on severe problem behavior have indicated that better outcomes are possible when treatment is designed from a functional assessment process and that even better outcomes are realized when a functional analysis is part of the process.

Despite functional analysis procedures existing for over 50 years, most people serving persons with autism or ID who engage in problem behavior do not conduct functional analyses prior to designing treatment. In fact, most Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) do not conduct functional analyses of problem behavior prior to its treatment.

This site is part of an attempt to close the research to practice gap with regard to functional analysis for persons with autism or ID who engage in problem behavior.
